Cheyenne Fire Rescue warns residents about smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that are being sold on e-commerce sites that are not listed or approved that have the potential to create a deadly scenario.
Cheyenne Fire Rescue along with leading fire organizations, and consumer advocacy groups such as Consumer Reports encourage consumers to use products that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and Edison Testing Laboratories (ETL). When these products have not been tested and certified, there is no third-party verification that they will operate correctly, creating a potentially deadly scenario for the consumer, according to Vision 20/20 – National Strategies for Fire Loss Prevention. Additionally, several companies are claiming that their devices have been certified to meet fire safety standards when they have not.
“We can’t expect our residents to be able to verify that these products work as advertised,” said Cheyenne Fire Rescue Prevention Chief Byron Mathews. “Cheyenne Fire Rescue, along with our safety partners, believe it’s important for us to alert the consumer about dangerous so-called safety devices being sold on e-commerce. Our concern is that these untested devices may not alert the occupants in a home of a fire, or sound an alarm or even operate properly.”
